Zuckerberg Announces End of Meta Fact-Checking While Wearing a $900,000 Wrist Watch
A former Meta fact-checking partner reacts to news of the end of the program and the CEO’s sartorial accessorizing choices.
In a video released Tuesday morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s plan to overhaul their content moderation policies.
“The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech," Zuckerberg said. "So we're gonna get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms."
As Zuckerberg walked viewers through the coming changes and their basis, he sat at a table leaning forward on his elbows, clasping and unclasping his hands in an authoritative, professional manner. Conspicuously on his wrist: a Greubel Forsey ‘Hand Made 1.’ The luxury wristwatch features a 43.5mm case made of white gold with a 60 hour chronometric power reserve. It is currently for sale at fine retailers for over $900,000.
The watch was first identified by Bloomberg which reported Greubel Forsey Chief Executive Officer Michel Nydegger responded to a request for comment saying: “It’s a pleasure to see someone who has played such a pivotal role in shaping the modern digital landscape and lifestyle show true appreciation for the most traditional approach to fine watchmaking today.”
The ‘Hand Made 1’ is the latest in a run of niche collector pieces to appear in Zuckerberg’s recent posts, demonstrating an enthusiasm and deep appreciation for highly coveted Swiss movements. In a New Year’s Eve post, the billionaire wore another $900,000 watch: a vintage 18k yellow gold Rolex Daytona Cosmograph ref 6239–one of the rare champagne dial “Paul Newman” models. He also owns an Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC from Bulgari, which made headlines last year when it set a new record for the world’s thinnest watch at 1.7mm in thickness, a mere 0.05mm thinner than Richard Mille’s RM UP-01 Ferrari. The titanium wristwatch was seen in a post Zuckerberg made announcing an AI update.
I can appreciate Zuckerberg’s watch collection, but his decision to end the fact-checking partnership program falls flatter than his Octo Finissimo Ultra.
